Breast Cancer Survivor Testimony
Anita came to our Sapulpa Women’s Health Clinic in February of 2019. She’d had a lump in her breast for seven years. She had lost her job due to her health issues. With no insurance, Anita was unable to pay for a doctor’s care. Her sister had heard about Good Samaritan’s Sapulpa Clinic from her sister who had seen one of our Facebook posts. Anita came to the clinic for high blood pressure and neck problems. “I already knew that part of my health problems was a lump in my breast,” Anita shared. “So when I heard that among the programs was a women’s clinic, I jumped at the chance.”
Through our partnership with Oklahoma Project Woman, Anita received a mammogram and was then diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer. “Praise God! Good Samaritan saved my life,” she said. “I know it could have been a lot worse.”
Our Breast Health Nurse Coordinator helped Anita apply to receive SoonerCare in order to receive the surgery and treatment she needed. She has had a total mastectomy on one side and will have follow-up radiation treatment.
“I’ve always been a believer in God,” Anita shared. “I think this experience has brought me closer to him. It is a blessing to have my prayers answered. I became fearful when I first got the test results, that’s normal, I think. But the fear did not last for long because I would feel that God was reminding me to keep the faith and that it was going to be okay.”
Anita shared her advice for others that may be going through a similar prognosis. “The fear will creep up on you, it’s normal,” she said, “just remember it’s all in God’s hands. He will take care of you no matter what. He will be right there beside you no matter the outcome.”
“I will miss my Good Samaritan family because with my diagnosis I may have Sooner Care for the rest of my life. Good Samaritan saved my life! I tell anyone I see about the wonderful Good Samaritan family. I’ll never forget the doctors, nurses, and volunteer staff for all they did for me. I’ll never forget! God Bless you all.
We would like to recognize and thank the Susan G. Komen Foundation for supporting our Women’s Health Clinic Program. We would also like to recognize and thank the Make Sense Foundation and the Edward and Helen Bartlett Foundation for supporting our clinic at the First Baptist Church of Sapulpa. It takes many “helpers” to offer life-saving care to our patients. May God Bless you for the kindness you have shown.
